Ramy Essam and Vindla String Quartet

Take part of the processes behind “Irhal – Moments from Tahrir Square” from Tambourine Studios in Malmö, recorded in 2015.

When Ramy Essam, musician from Mansoura in Egypt, played his protest songs in Tahrir Square in Cairo during the revolution in 2011, 100,000’s of people joined in. For that he got arrested, tortured and censored. In October 2014 he was offered a safe city residence for two years by the Malmö Municipality of Sweden. He can now continue his fight for freedom through his music.

Musik i Syd invited Ramy Essam to share his story together with Vindla String Quartet in a site-specific piece of music at Möllevångstorget in Malmö. The idea was to bring an artistic challenge into a new collaboration, but also to show that Musik i Syd as a music institution in this region is an important part of the professional network for migrant musicians.
